Sunday shows preview: Trump hints at upcoming trade agreements; first American pope chosen

President Trump recently spoke about future trade dealings with international partners, especially with some anxiety in global and national markets stemming from tariffs that might push consumer prices up.

This week, the White House reached its first trade agreement with the UK since rolling out the new taxation related to the “liberation day.”

The deal permits American farmers to export more beef and produce to the UK and Ireland, though there’s still a 10% import tax applied from that region. US Ambassador to the UK, Peter Mandelson, is expected to discuss the specifics of trade policy on CBS’s “Face the Nation” this Sunday.

The automotive industry is urging the president to redirect trade contracts towards neighboring countries like Canada and Mexico, where many vehicle manufacturing plants are located. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is set to discuss ongoing financial negotiations and upcoming proposals during his appearances on both CNN’s “State of the Union” and Fox News’s “Fox News Sunday.”

On Friday, Trump hinted that tariffs on China, which is the second-largest economy, might decrease soon. He even toyed with the idea of imposing an 80% tariff on the Asian country in a social media post.

The next day, Lutnick confirmed that a trade deal with China remains a high priority for the administration, ahead of scheduled discussions in Switzerland, where Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent and the Trump administration are advocating for an end to the ongoing trade conflict.

On Tuesday, the president plans to visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE as part of efforts to address the situation in Gaza.

Western allies, including the US, are engaged in discussions regarding a “complete, unconditional” 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, as prompted by the Kremlin.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov will discuss how Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to respond during his appearance on ABC’s “This Week.”

“We need to consider this situation carefully. It’s a significant development,” Peskov remarked on CNN. “However, attempting to pressure us is ultimately futile,” he added.

The Trump administration has been working for months to mitigate violence in the region.

The late Pope Francis often prayed for global peace amid rising chaos. With his passing, Pope Leo XIV has taken on this intercessory role within the Catholic Church.

Pope Leo XIV marks a historic milestone as the first American pope. He has drawn media attention recently, highlighting his childhood and service background in Chicago.

Rev. Peter M. Donohue, president of Villanova University, may comment on the implications of this new role during his discussion on ABC’s “This Week.”
