Trump’s recent Fox News appointment seems even worse than Pete Hegseth.

The connection between the Trump administration and right-leaning Fox News is highlighted this week as the president appointed Janeine Pirro to a key legal position in Washington, DC. This decision has raised eyebrows, particularly regarding her qualifications—many deem her even less suitable than Pete Hegseth, whom Trump appointed months earlier as Secretary of Defense. Hegseth, despite his flaws, was viewed as a significant embarrassment due to his reckless communication that put national security secrets at risk.

Pirro, who once served as a district attorney at the county level, hasn’t held a governmental legal position for decades. Yet, she has spent the last 14 years sharing her views on Fox, even hosting one of the network’s popular afternoon talk shows.

In a social media post, Trump announced his plans to nominate Pirro for the interim prosecutor role, suggesting he believes she has the necessary qualifications. Whether that’s truly the case is debatable.

Pirro’s performance on Fox has been controversial, even within the context of a network often criticized for its propaganda. She faced backlash in the past for aggressively pushing Trump’s unfounded claims of voter fraud during the 2020 election—a situation that ultimately led to Fox settling a lawsuit for nearly $800 million over false statements made on air.

At one point, she was suspended for her disparaging remarks about Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, implying that Omar adhered to “Sharia law” and calling for “cleansing” within federal agencies, claiming they were filled with people deserving of arrest.

However, none of this seems to concern Trump. What matters most to him is Pirro’s unwavering loyalty. Over the years, she has been a steadfast supporter, consistently showering praise on him and attacking his detractors.

Commentators have noted that since Trump took office, Pirro has actively supported his agenda while undermining those who oppose him. Interestingly, this pattern is not new; other former Fox figures, like Tom Homan and Mike Huckabee, have made their way into prominent roles in Trump’s administration.

With her long-standing devotion, Pirro is positioned to serve Trump’s interests, advocating for anti-immigration initiatives and challenging the legitimacy of political opponents. Although Trump seldom reciprocates loyalty, he did issue a pardon for her ex-husband, who faced serious legal troubles.

This relationship seems almost symbiotic, especially as Trump seeks to appoint someone who aligns with his approach. While Pirro’s nomination may face challenges—especially concerning the legal limits on presidential appointments—there’s no question that Trump hopes to secure her position for the long haul.

Given the rocky reception of Hegseth’s earlier appointment, one might expect Trump to be more cautious in selecting another high-profile figure from television for such a significant role overseeing millions of employees. Yet, it appears he doesn’t share that concern.

To Trump, the distinction between Fox News and legitimate qualifications seems increasingly blurred, particularly when loyalty to him and his base is concerned.
