Hamas Announces Intent to Release American Hostage
On Sunday, Hamas stated that it would release Edan Alexander, an American citizen held captive in Gaza since the group’s attacks on southern Israel on October 7.
In a translated statement, Hamas mentioned ongoing discussions with the U.S. government, emphasizing their positive approach towards achieving a ceasefire. They referred to Alexander as an Israeli soldier with dual American citizenship and indicated that his release is part of broader measures aimed at ending the violence, reopening border crossings, and facilitating aid to the people in Gaza.
Palestinian Leaders Urge More Releases
Details regarding the specific timing of Alexander’s release remain uncertain.
Born in Tel Aviv and raised in Tenafly, New Jersey, Alexander moved to Israel at 18 to volunteer for the IDF Golani Brigade. Prior to his capture, he lived with his grandparents in Tel Aviv and Kibbutz Hazeur, where he was part of a community supporting lonely soldiers.
On October 7, he had the opportunity to leave his base to spend time with his mother, who was visiting from abroad. He chose to remain at the base, perhaps feeling a sense of duty to his fellow soldiers.
