Massachusetts Arrest Sparks Controversy
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has indicated that the Worcester City Council in Massachusetts, particularly Councilor Etel Haxhiaj, contributed to confusion during an arrest by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). On Thursday, ICE detained an individual identified as Ferreira de Oliveira, described by DHS as a “violent criminal alien.”
According to DHS Deputy Chief Tricia McLaughlin, Haxhiaj’s political actions have complicated law enforcement efforts, stating, “ICE officers and local police have regained control, and ICE arrested Ferreira de Oliveira.” The agency mentioned that local police also arrested a pregnant woman for assault and battery.
A video circulating over the weekend captured approximately 25 individuals gathered to obstruct the arrest, which police termed a “confusing incident.” Protesters were seen chanting phrases like “Don’t take your mother” and “No warrant” as a woman was escorted to a vehicle by uniformed agents.
The Worcester Police Patrol Officers Union reported that police were called to assist federal officers amid escalating tensions. “Officers on the scene requested additional backup as the situation intensified quickly,” the union said. They acknowledged the emotional volatility surrounding such arrests, emphasizing that dealing with family separations is particularly challenging.
The union further expressed concerns for the safety of officers present, reflecting that federal and local officials faced aggressive behavior from some protestors. Haxhiaj, as an elected official, was called out for instigating unrest, with the union labeling her actions as unacceptable and harmful to law enforcement.
“Public representatives should not incite violence or disregard police authority. Haxhiaj’s behavior exacerbated the situation and ultimately posed risks to officers,” they stated.
The union is calling for an ethical review of Haxhiaj’s conduct, asserting that no one should act recklessly against police. “We demand accountability for any behavior deemed criminal or unethical,” they noted.
As of now, Haxhiaj has not commented publicly on the incident. Meanwhile, another arrest at the scene involved a person identified as Worcester Spring, who allegedly assaulted officers and threw an unknown liquid at them. Spring faces multiple charges, including assault and battery against a police officer and disorderly conduct. The police continue to investigate the incident, suggesting that further charges may be forthcoming.
