On Sunday, Treasury Secretary Scott Becent noted that the Trump administration had made “significant progress” in trade talks with China.
Becent, alongside U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, is engaged in discussions in Geneva, Switzerland, focusing on establishing fairer agreements with China.
Becent expressed in a statement:
We are happy to announce substantial progress in an important trade dialogue with China. First off, I want to thank our Swiss hosts for providing such a fantastic venue, which I think contributed to our productive discussions. I’ll provide more details in the briefing tomorrow, but this meeting was indeed fruitful. We had the Deputy Prime Minister, two Deputy Ministers, Ambassador Jamieson, and myself all working together. I also spoke with President Trump, who, like Ambassador Jamieson last night, is fully updated on our progress. A comprehensive briefing will follow tomorrow morning.
“It’s important to note how swiftly we were able to come to an agreement, suggesting that the differences may not have been as significant as initially believed,” Greer commented.
“We think collaborating with our Chinese partners will aid in addressing the issues we face in our country,” he added.
Prior to and after Trump’s announcement of a 145% tariff, there were ongoing discussions about tariffs, which saw China imposing a 125% tariff on American goods in retaliation.
Trump praised the opening day of negotiations, stating that U.S. negotiators had “a very good meeting with China” in a social media post.
“Many topics were discussed, and a lot was agreed upon. We negotiated a complete reset in a friendly and constructive manner,” Trump stated.
