Residents leap from windows as Milwaukee apartment blaze claims 4 lives

During a fire in a four-story apartment building in Milwaukee on Mother’s Day, residents jumped from windows as flames engulfed the structure. Tragically, four people lost their lives, while another four sustained serious injuries. The fire intensified rapidly, with flames reaching above the first responders, according to local authorities.

On Sunday, Aaron Lipski of the Milwaukee Fire Station utilized a ladder truck to rescue residents trapped inside. Firefighters crawled through the smoke-filled building to guide individuals to safety.

In total, approximately 30 individuals were rescued from the blaze.

While the cause of the fire remains unknown, Lipski emphasized that the building, constructed in 1968, lacked a sprinkler system—something that may have mitigated the disaster. He noted that if sprinklers had been installed, the fire could have been relatively minor, potentially preventing some residents from having to leap from windows.

Several other occupants received treatment for lesser injuries after the fire, which started shortly before 8 AM.

The flames rendered the 85-unit building uninhabitable, displacing an estimated 200 residents.

James Rubinstein, a resident, recounted jumping to the first floor amid the chaos. He described the overwhelming smoke and shared his experience of navigating to safety with his cat and backpack.

Emergency dispatchers received calls reporting that people were trapped and desperately jumping to escape the inferno.

The initial firefighters faced fierce flames that were said to be “far, far away” from their position, according to Lipski.

Authorities have yet to disclose the identities or ages of the victims.

Lipski mentioned that the fire originated in a common area and quickly spread through multiple floors.

Eddie Edwards, another resident, also sought to escape the building during the crisis. He expressed his instinct to flee, saying, “I had no idea about anything other than to get away. I’m going outside and saving everyone’s lives. It was a horrifying moment.”
