Family Dollar is joining the lineup of retailers on Uber Eats, as discount chains brace for significant ownership changes and numerous store closures.
This week, Uber announced that Family Dollar would be added to its platform, broadening its array of retail partner delivery services, which let customers get groceries and household supplies delivered right to their homes.
This shift comes right after Dollar Tree’s decision to sell the Family Dollar brand to private equity firms Brigade Capital Management and Maselum Capital Management for $1 billion.
The sale represents a substantial reduction from the $8.5 billion Dollar Tree invested in acquiring Family Dollar in 2015 after a fierce competition with Dollar General.
Despite its initial goal to grow in the discount retail space, Dollar Tree has faced challenges integrating the chain, including supply chain issues, underperforming stores, and broader operational hurdles.
According to Dollar Tree, this sale will let them concentrate on their primary brands.
Matt Perkal from Brigade stated, “Since 1959, Family Dollar has been committed to providing accessible, quality products that are invaluable to their communities across the country. We aim to enhance and strengthen Family Dollar as we take over, believing this will be beneficial for employees, customers, and the community.”
The acquisition is set to finalize in the second quarter of 2025. Yet, the new management faces significant challenges. Retail analyst Neil Sanders notes that Family Dollar struggles with inconsistent pricing and lacks a complete customer base compared to other discount retailers.
This acquisition is happening amid cost-cutting initiatives throughout the discount retail sector.
Dollar Tree has also begun the process of shuttering hundreds of Family Dollar locations, with around 600 planned closures in the first half of 2024, plus another 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree locations expected to shut down in the upcoming years.
Additionally, the company has announced an increase in product prices.
During a revenue call for 2024, Dollar Tree revealed plans to raise prices on over 300 items from $1.25 to $1.50, with a potential maximum price increase to $7 as part of a broader pricing strategy. Executives hinted at possibly introducing a $10 price limit in the future.
As of February 1, 2025, Dollar Tree operates 16,500 Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores across 48 U.S. states and five Canadian provinces.
Meanwhile, Dollar General is also implementing its store optimization strategy, announcing closures following a strategic review.
