Trump’s Acceptance of Qatar’s Gift Sparks Controversy
On Monday, President Donald Trump faced ABC News reporters as he accepted a lavish gift from Qatar’s royal family for the US government. The gift is a Boeing 747-8 jet, which was previously used as Air Force One and is set to be transitioned to his presidential library after his second term, as reported by ABC News. Reporters questioned why Trump opted to keep the jet, especially with public criticism surrounding the acceptance of such a gift.
One reporter asked, “What do you say to people who claim you’ve received a luxury jet as a personal gift? Why not turn it down?”
Trump’s response included a retort about ABC News being fake. He speculated on the jet’s value, saying, “I could pay you $1 billion or $400 million or something like that. Or, I guess, I just say thank you when given a putt; you pick it up, walk to the next hole, and say ‘thank you.’”
The president clarified that the jet isn’t intended as a personal gift but is a donation to the Department of Defense. “It’s a gift to the Department of Defense, and you should know better because your network is a disaster,” Trump emphasized, criticizing ABC News directly.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump lashed out at Democrats for referring to the gift as a “very public and transparent transaction,” claiming they wanted the US government to cover the cost of the jet. He expressed annoyance that the Pentagon is giving away a 747 to replace the aging Air Force One under what he considers a straightforward deal.
White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt stated to NBC News that all gifts from foreign governments are, “always accepted in full compliance with all applicable laws.” ABC News added that White House officials would not be present during the trip concerning the jet.
