Authorities consider assault charges for politicians who demonstrated at the NJ ICE center

A left-handed politician from New Jersey, Robert Menendez Jr., was accused by a Homeland Security spokesperson of seeking “15 minutes of fame” after storming the Newark Immigration Detention Center. This incident has prompted federal consideration of criminal charges related to assault.

Tricia McLaughlin, the assistant secretary for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), commented last week about the actions of Menendez, along with La Monica McQuiver, Bonnie Watson Coleman, and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, saying their stunt at Delaney Hall Detention Center was unwarranted.

On “Fox and Friends,” she remarked, “It’s clear that these members of Congress are craving attention, but they seem willing to jeopardize the safety of law enforcement and detainees.” The politicians were among those urging for the closure of facilities housing undocumented immigrants.

Baraka, a Democratic candidate for governor, was arrested for trespassing after allegedly ignoring multiple warnings to leave the area outside the Detention Center.

McLaughlin asserted that the actions of these local leaders and the protesters “don’t adhere to the law.” While Menendez, McQuiver, and Coleman have not been charged yet, an investigation into their confrontations with ICE agents is ongoing, leaving the possibility of future arrests open.

According to video evidence shared by Fox News, the footage shows Menendez and McQuiver in a heated altercation with ICE officers at security checkpoints, where McQuiver appears to confront an agent aggressively.

McLaughlin stated, “It certainly looks like an attack. People can judge for themselves. Members of Congress shouldn’t engage with law enforcement in this manner.” Meanwhile, the Democratic politicians involved have criticized ICE agents for escalating the confrontation.

After his release on Friday night, Baraka was welcomed back by a gathering of supporters, including socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.
