Gallego Unveils Border Security and Immigration Reform Plan
Arizona Democrat Senator Reuben Gallego has introduced a new initiative focused on border security and immigration reform, which has garnered swift approval from several House Democrats.
Gallego, who is the child of Mexican and Colombian immigrants, outlined a framework consisting of five key pillars to showcase his dedication to enhancing security at the southern border.
“We don’t have to choose between border security and immigration reform,” he emphasized, adding, “We can do both.”
The senator’s plan, often seen as a conservative issue, merges Republican priorities such as increased staffing for border patrols with a Democratic favorite: a “path to citizenship” for certain immigrants, aimed partly at realizing economic benefits.
His approach seeks to expedite processes, encouraging asylum seekers to go through official channels and promoting “fair sharing” to address the violence and economic challenges in their home regions.
The plan proposes increasing the annual allocation of green cards and expanding the use of E-Verify, a system that verifies an employee’s legal work status in the U.S.
In terms of asylum case reform, Gallego intends to hire more officers dedicated to processing claims, granting them greater authority in resolving cases.
Representative Vicente Gonzalez from Texas praised Gallego for this practical and urgent framework, stating, “We need to find common ground on this issue and adopt this kind of approach.”
He elaborated that local representatives understand the need for reforming outdated asylum systems, investing in border patrol, creating legal pathways, and addressing the root causes of irregular migration while ensuring the safety of border communities against dangerous drugs.
Support for the plan also comes from New York Representative Tom Suozzi, who commended Gallego for his leadership in securing borders and fixing the asylum system. He highlighted the importance of balancing immigration policies while addressing the extreme demands from both sides of the political spectrum.
Fox News Digital has reached out to the White House for comments regarding Gallego’s proposals.
