The Miami football player involved in a tragic car accident that resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including two children, has been identified as linebacker Adarius Hayes, according to police reports from Monday. Hayes suffered injuries in the crash but has since been released from the hospital.
The fatalities occurred in a Kia Soul and included victims aged 78, 10, and 4.
In a statement, the Hurricanes expressed their sorrow, stating, “We are deeply saddened to learn that the crash caused three deaths, as confirmed by the Largo police, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those who have been lost.” The university is still collecting more information regarding the incident.
Another passenger in the Kia was hospitalized with serious injuries, police noted.
Largo Police spokesperson Megan Santo clarified that there were no signs of impairment among the drivers involved in the crash. However, reports suggest Hayes has a history of speeding and careless driving, which previously led to a different accident.
Hayes, a four-star recruit from Largo High, played in 12 games last season as a freshman with the Hurricanes after garnering interest from several prominent colleges, including Florida, Alabama, and Michigan. He ultimately chose to play for Miami.
Largo is situated roughly 20 miles east of Tampa and 15 miles north of St. Petersburg along Florida’s Gulf Coast.
