DNC Begins Steps to Remove David Hogg from Vice Chair Position

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has taken action to prevent David Hogg, a gun control advocate and survivor of the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, from serving as vice-chairman.

On Monday, the DNC’s Eligibility Committee voted 13-2 to invalidate the election results from February in which Hogg and Pennsylvania Representative Malcolm Kenyatta (D) were elected. According to a co-chair of the DNC, this decision was influenced by Hogg’s reported intention to “spend up to $20 million” on a campaign against current Democratic leaders.

As reported, the Credentials Committee’s decision followed “three hours of internal discussion and one tie vote,” ultimately leading to the expulsion of Hogg and Kenyatta from their roles as Vice-Chair of the DNC prior to a full committee meeting.

The outcome, reached after extensive internal debate, now places the matter before the entire Democratic National Committee. They will have to decide whether Hogg and Kenyatta will pursue reelection later this year.

Hogg, at 25, a vociferous survivor of the 2018 Parkland shooting, has faced backlash for his plans to allocate significant funds towards defeating incumbent Democrats. DNC Chair Ken Martin expressed that it was inappropriate for Hogg to involve himself in primary battles while holding a party position and urged him to adhere to party guidelines by remaining neutral.

Hogg issued a statement acknowledging the DNC’s move as “the first step” towards his removal, emphasizing that “the broader context” of his advocacy cannot be overlooked.

“Today, the DNC has initiated the process to remove me from my Vice-Chairman role,” he remarked. “The vote related to the election process of the DNC and was not solely about me, but one cannot ignore the larger implications of my efforts to bring about change within the party.”

The DNC’s Credentials Committee acted in response to a complaint filed by Kalyn Free, one of the candidates vying for the position of Vice-Chair.

Interestingly, discussions regarding Hogg’s plans to get involved in the primaries were not part of the committee’s deliberations:

The focus on Hogg’s intent to engage in the primaries did not arise during Monday’s discussions, which instead led to a controversial decision by a party official to combine votes from the two last vice-chairman slots into a single vote.

“This is about fairness and ensuring that the voices of the three women and DNC voting members are heard,” Free commented.

Hogg added in his statement, “Our country faces significant crises while many Democratic leaders appear unresponsive. Trump is actively undermining our economy, abusing power without due process, and participating in severe corruption, yet voters still hold more trust in him than in Democrats. That’s quite an indictment of our party.”

Just this past Saturday, DNC Chairman Ken Martin urged Hogg to either maintain neutrality in political matters or step down from his role as co-chair. Reports indicate this.

“His role is to ensure fairness and inclusivity for all Democrats, setting aside personal beliefs or loyalties,” Martin stated.

Additionally, in December 2024, Hogg had announced his candidacy for DNC vice-chair, expressing that the position offers a vital platform for the voices of young Democrats.

“I want to be a voice for young people and ensure that Democrats genuinely represent working-class interests,” Hogg remarked in comments to ABC News.
