SALT Income Cap Fails to Tackle Regions with Extremely High Property Taxes

During a segment on News Nation’s “Hill” on Monday, Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) expressed concerns that the proposed tax plan’s salt revenue cap fails to take into account the extremely high property taxes in states like New York.

He remarked, “I won’t say that I’ll totally oppose the bill if there’s no salt amendment, but the committee chair’s approach doesn’t really tackle the core issue. By the end of this year, the salt cap is set to expire, which means it will revert to being unlimited.”

Lawler continued, “In my district, three out of four counties have some of the highest property tax burdens in the nation. These counties rank among the top 16 in the country, yet they only have an income cap, and the proposal does not address the significant property tax rates we see in states like New York.”
