Manchester United plans to keep Reuben Amorim as head coach for the next season, regardless of the outcome in the Europa League final against Tottenham. Despite a challenging league season, the club’s management believes the Portuguese coach deserves a proper transfer window this summer, aiming to enhance their squad with players that fit his strategies.
The team wrapped up the Premier League in 16th place, marking their worst performance since the 1973-74 season. Amorim took over from Erik Ten Hag in November but struggled to bring about significant changes and faced early exits from the FA Cup against Fulham and the League Cup against Tottenham.
The Europa League could salvage what has been a dismal season, as a victory over Spurs in Bilbao on May 21st would secure a spot in the Champions League. However, after a 2-0 home defeat to West Ham, Amorim hinted at potential departure if results do not improve.
“I’m addressing my situation, as well as the culture of the club and the team,” he remarked. “We must be strong and courageous this summer; if we begin like this, there’s no successful season ahead. [My position] may have to be reassessed.”
He continued, “It’s a mental issue. We’re no longer afraid to lose as Manchester United; that’s the most dangerous mindset a big club can possess.”
Amorim has identified Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Liam Delap from Ipswich as key targets for the rebuilding phase. Nevertheless, United will need to generate funds through player sales to secure these players, with Cunha’s release clause set at £62.5 million and Delap at £30 million.
Marcus Rashford is among those likely to leave this summer, with Aston Villa interested in acquiring the England international. They have the option to buy him for £40 million; however, if Rashford moves to another club, United stands to gain a higher transfer fee.
Additionally, Jadon Sancho, Antony, Casemiro, and Rasmus Højlund are also expected to contribute to United’s transfer budget.
