Energy regulator reveals shocking carbon footprint of Sanders’ traveling tour

Bernie Sanders’ Tour Emits Significant Carbon Footprint

As Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders embarks on his “Fighting Oligarchy” tour, he defends his use of private jets despite criticism. The Energy Watchdog Group recently calculated the carbon emissions resulting from his flights, estimating a total of 62.15 tons of carbon dioxide across 16 tour stops, aided by progressive MP Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

To provide some context, the group noted that this level of emissions is equivalent to burning about 62,600 pounds of coal or driving gas-powered SUVs for 150,000 miles. Moreover, it could power every home in Burlington, Vermont, for several weeks or could equal the annual emissions produced by nine households.

Interestingly, Power the Future pointed out that Sanders’ tour alone produced more carbon emissions than what the average American emits over a span of five years. The organization also noted that these emissions would negate the carbon capture efforts of approximately 2,900 trees in a year.

Critics have labeled Sanders a “limousine liberal,” highlighting a contradiction between his political stance on climate issues and his personal choices. One critic remarked, “The climate movement is dead, and Bernie Sanders’ hypocrisy helped kill it.”

In defense of his actions, Sanders has indicated that he doesn’t see the necessity to apologize for these flights, stating that commercial travel would be impractical given the nature of his schedule. “You can’t expect me to wait in line while trying to talk to 30,000 people,” he said, emphasizing that for effective campaigning, private jets are necessary.

Moreover, one flight on his agenda was along a route with over a dozen commercial flights available daily between Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, which raises further questions about the necessity of his choice.

According to federal election filings, Sanders’ campaign committee, Friends of Bernie Sanders, spent over $221,000 in the first quarter of 2025 on private jet charters from several companies, including Ventura Jet, Cirrus Aviation Services, and N-Jet. This spending was highlighted in a previous report, noting that the private jets could cost as much as $15,000 per hour.

The expenditures led to criticisms about the perceived disconnect between the lifestyle of Sanders and the messages he advocates, particularly during a campaign where he, alongside Ocasio-Cortez, calls for reduced carbon footprints among everyday Americans.

While Sanders continues his tour, the debate regarding his environmental impact and the implications of his travel choices remain contentious topics among critics and supporters alike.
