Netanyahu Vows Continued Action Against Hamas
On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that actions against Hamas would intensify in the coming days as part of a broader campaign against Iran-supported terrorist groups. While visiting Israeli Defence Force reservists, he emphasized the need to decisively dismantle Hamas.
“In the next few days, we’ll aim to wrap up this operation,” Netanyahu remarked, specifying that achieving this meant completely breaking Hamas. He is determined to eradicate the group and ensure the return of hostages taken during the attack on October 7, 2023.
In a notable development, American hostage Edan Alexander was freed by Hamas after being held for more than 580 days.
Netanyahu also hinted that Hamas might propose a temporary pause. “If they say ‘timeout,’ then great, let’s bring back more hostages,” he said. Despite the possibility of a short ceasefire, he clarified that military actions would continue. As of now, 58 other hostages remain in Gaza.
Relations under Netanyahu’s Middle Eastern policy appear to be increasingly strained.
U.S. Special Envoy Adam Bohler and Middle Eastern Envoy Steve Witkov recently met with families of hostages for about two hours in Tel Aviv before engaging in discussions about the ceasefire in Gaza. They are set to travel to Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday.
Bohler expressed optimism about securing the release of additional hostages, following Alexander’s freeing. He and Witkov reassured families that they wouldn’t head to Doha unless they believed genuine progress could be made in negotiations.
In related news, President Donald Trump is embarking on a four-day trip to the Middle East, starting in Saudi Arabia, where he is expected to discuss solutions for the ongoing conflict in Gaza and other regional issues.
