Ed Martin leaves the US attorney’s office in DC as Pirro is about to assume leadership.

Ed Martin, the interim U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, transitioned the role to Fox News host and former judge Janine Pirro on Tuesday, following a surge in nominations.

During a press conference, Martin announced his resignation, stating that President Trump had reassigned him to two different positions within the Justice Department. He mentioned an initiative aimed at addressing the perceived misuse of the judicial system.

“When President Donald J. Trump initially asked me to take on the role of U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, I recognized it as a significant opportunity and accepted it immediately,” Martin shared. “I understood that if President Trump executed his vision as intended, there would be considerable attention.”

The U.S. attorney website has already updated to reflect Martin’s new responsibilities. At the press conference, he criticized President Biden’s recent pardons, indicating that they would be subject to examination in his forthcoming role.

“I believe President Biden’s pardons warrant careful scrutiny,” Martin asserted. “They need this attention because we aim for amnesty to be handled properly, so I intend to review them.”

The contentious nomination process for the U.S. attorney position has faltered after losing support from Senator Tom Tillis (R-N.C.), a crucial vote on the Senate Judiciary Committee, particularly regarding those involved in the January 6, 2021 Capitol events.

Martin, previously associated with the “Stop the Steal” movement, vocally defended the actions of the January 6th rioters. In his capacity as interim U.S. attorney, he launched an investigation into the felony obstruction charges against several individuals involved and oversaw the reassignment of prosecutors working on the January 6th cases.

“Ultimately, the president determined that we did not wish to proceed further,” Martin remarked on Tuesday.

Last week, as it became apparent that Martin’s confirmation was unlikely, Trump played a hesitant role in support, though it remained unclear whether the president intended to nominate Pirro for a full-time position.

Pirro, a frequent host on Fox News known for her appearances on “The Five,” has previously served as a judge and prosecutor and has been elected multiple times as the district attorney for Westchester County, New York.

Martin commended Pirro for her “intellectual and real-world experiences,” expressing confidence in her ability to take on the role. She is set to be sworn in on Wednesday.
