Democrats Who Praised Biden’s Pharmaceutical Moves Completely Change Their Stance on Trump’s Drug Pricing Order

Democratic lawmakers who previously supported former President Joe Biden’s initiatives against the pharmaceutical industry are now commending President Trump’s recent executive order.

On Monday, Trump issued a significant executive order aimed at reducing prescription drug prices, claiming reductions might reach up to 90%.

In a recent post, Trump stated, “If you think the price of the drug will drop even more… We’ve reduced it by 60, 70, 80, and 90%. But if you really think about it…”

Americans currently pay more for prescription drugs than those in any other developed country, highlighting the necessity for lower prices. This issue has garnered bipartisan support as a public policy priority.

Interestingly, Democrats who hailed Biden’s executive order on drug pricing now seem critical of Trump’s actions. Notably, a pharmaceutical tax loophole is reportedly costing Americans over a billion dollars annually.

Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts dismissed Trump’s order as merely a “flashy press release.” She urged Trump to actively support legislation that could effectively lower drug prices, criticizing him for allegedly planning to dismantle health insurance for millions.

However, back in 2023, Warren commended Biden for proposing measures allowing the National Institutes of Health to license drugs to alternative manufacturers when prices are excessively high. She expressed that Biden was taking important steps to curb pharmaceutical abuses.

Meanwhile, Senator Ron Wyden from Oregon also voiced his skepticism about Trump’s sincerity. He remarked that Trump has yet to take meaningful action, suggesting that real change would require collaboration with Congress to enhance Medicare drug price negotiations.

Wyden alluded to the Inflation Reduction Act passed by Democrats in 2022, which empowered Medicare to negotiate prices for older adults but didn’t credit Biden’s earlier efforts from 2021.

Senator Bernie Sanders, who often aligns with Democrats, emphasized the need for Trump to support forthcoming legislation to ensure Americans aren’t paying excessively compared to other nations. He indicated that unity could expedite the passage of such measures.

In a more positive light, California Representative Ro Khanna, who is also a Democrat, endorsed Trump’s recent actions. He announced his intention to introduce a law codifying Trump’s executive orders to prevent Americans from facing higher drug prices than those abroad.
