Iran Open to Nuclear Deal with U.S. If Sanctions Are Eased
Ali Shamhani, a senior adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, stated that if economic sanctions are lifted, Iran would be willing to engage in nuclear negotiations with President Donald Trump.
In an interview with NBC News, Shamhani mentioned that should the demands of the Iranian regime be met, Iran could potentially dismantle its nuclear weapons programs and eliminate its substantial stockpile of enriched uranium.
“That’s still a possibility. If we align with what the Americans propose, we could definitely foster a better relationship,” Shamhani noted.
While addressing Saudi Arabia’s Gulf Cooperation Council, Trump expressed his desire to establish a contract with Iran, asserting that for this to happen, Iran must cease its alarming sponsorship of proxy wars and allow for ongoing verification of its nuclear pursuits. “They can’t have nuclear weapons,” he reiterated.
Shamhani also suggested that Iran would be willing to limit enriched uranium to levels suitable for civilian purposes and permit international inspections.
Shamhani remarked, “That’s still in the cards. If we comply as the Americans suggest, a more positive environment could emerge soon.” However, he pointed out that negotiations might be undermined if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu applies pressure in Washington.
Trump added, “We seek to make your region and the world safer. However, if the Iranian leadership continues to reject this opportunity and aggress against our neighbors, we’ll have no choice but to exert maximum pressure.”
Despite Trump’s assertions, Shamhani criticized his approach, suggesting it has been excessively punitive. “He’s speaking about olive branches, but all we see are barbed wires,” he observed.
