Halle Berry Weighs in on Female James Bond Debate
Halle Berry, known for her role as a Bond girl in “Die Another Day,” has shared her thoughts on the ongoing discussion about whether the iconic character of James Bond should be portrayed by a woman.
During her time as a judge at the Cannes Film Festival, the 58-year-old actress expressed some uncertainty about the idea. “I don’t know if 007 should really be a woman,” she stated. “It’s nice to say in 2025, ‘Oh, she should be a woman.’ But I’m not fully convinced that’s the right approach.”
Berry portrayed Giacinta “Jinx” Johnson in the 2002 film alongside Pierce Brosnan. The conversation around a female James Bond has been a contentious topic in Hollywood for nearly a decade.
Back in 2017, she rejected the notion of replacing Bond with a female character, suggesting that it might be better to create an original female spy instead. “I want [women] to have their moment, but I’m not sure if Bond should be a woman or not,” Berry remarked. “The series has a rich history tied to Ian Fleming’s storytelling, so I’m not sure it should be altered.”
She further proposed that a new female character could certainly emerge, but it might not need to be tied to the Bond name. Other former Bond girls have expressed similar skepticism over the years. For instance, in 2019, Valerie Leon, who appeared in “The Spy Who Loved Me,” criticized the idea, emphasizing that Bond has always been depicted as a quintessentially successful male character.
Leon pointed out, “He’s a fantasy—many men want to be Bond, and many women aspire to be like him. But how do we imagine women in that role? Men don’t really see women as assassins.”
British actress Gemma Arterton, who starred in “Quantum of Solace,” also voiced her concerns about respecting the legacy of the character. “Should James Bond, like Mary Poppins, be played by men?” she questioned. “It’s a topic of discussion, but some ideas seem too wild.”
The last portrayal of James Bond was by Daniel Craig in “No Time to Die,” released in 2021. Recently, Amazon MGM Studios acquired the rights to the 007 franchise, though there have been no announcements regarding future plans for the series.
