Representative Sri Thanedar’s Impeachment Efforts
Representative Sri Thanedar, a 70-year-old Democrat from Michigan, introduced seven articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump last month. He described these actions as “a widespread abuse of power, a fierce violation of the constitution, and an act of tyranny that undermines American democracy and threatens the rule of law.”
On Tuesday, he urged his colleagues to support his articles, emphasizing that “it’s never the wrong time to stand up to our constitution.” However, many fellow Democrats appear to have reservations, believing that now may not be the right moment for such a move.
Thanedar planned to bring a resolution to the floor for consideration on Wednesday but ultimately opted against it, likely to avoid possible embarrassment.
This week, Democrats have faced criticism regarding their leadership and opposition to significant tax cuts while allegedly attempting to downplay President Biden’s cognitive challenges over the past four years. Some argue that these issues do not genuinely benefit the American public. Meanwhile, President Trump is pushing for historic tax relief.
Earlier in the day, California’s Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar commented, stating, “This is not the right approach we should take.” In recent weeks, several Democrats have requested to withdraw their names from Thanedar’s resolution.
Representative Jamie Ruskin from Maryland remarked that Democrats may not possess the necessary strength to effectively pursue the articles of impeachment. According to reports from the Associated Press, this sentiment has become increasingly vocal among party members.
Approval ratings for Congressional Democrats have recently hit record lows. A YouGov poll indicated that 54% of Americans view Democrats unfavorably, while only 33% offered positive feedback.
Ruskin noted, “There is no support for this resolution,” implying that the complexities surrounding impeachment could hinder Democratic progress. Aguilar also pointed out that Thanedar’s proposal seemed both “not ripe and not timely.” He added that there had been no hearings to examine the issues raised in the resolution, calling it a pointless exercise at this juncture.
Reports from Axios indicated that Representative Jerry Nadler praised the resolution as “dead” and “terrifying” during a recent House Democrats meeting. Notably, several Democratic representatives, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, were seen speaking personally with Thanedar before his decision to withdraw.
Thanedar remarked, “In the 15 days since I submitted these articles against President Trump, he committed further offenses.” He specifically cited Trump’s acceptance of a $400 million private jet from Qatar, a move even criticized by some Congressional Republicans. Following discussions with various colleagues, he chose not to pursue a vote on the articles this time.
Having immigrated from India, Thanedar has found support among some party members, including Rashida Tlaib, who also faces challenges herself. His withdrawal from the resolution accused Trump of “creating illegal offices” and highlighted accusations of “tyrannical overreach,” “abuse of trade power,” “First Amendment violations,” and other serious allegations against the President.
