Israeli airstrikes result in at least 80 deaths as Trump expresses desire to make Gaza a ‘freedom zone’

On Thursday morning, Israel intensified its airstrikes and artillery fire targeting Gaza, resulting in at least 80 fatalities. This escalation has raised concerns about ongoing violence in the region.

Interestingly, Trump remarked about a previous proposal to let the U.S. take control of Gaza, suggesting it could transform into a luxurious recreational area and business zone. This idea has not gone over well globally, with fears that it might lead to the permanent displacement of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents.

During his Middle East visit in Qatar, Trump stated, “I think I have the concept of Gaza. Let’s make it a free zone and let the U.S. engage with it.” There seemed to be some pride in this stance, although it’s hard to gauge the reaction from the Palestinian side.

Basem Naim, a Hamas official, strongly opposed such notions, declaring that Gaza is not for sale. He emphasized their commitment to the land and the future of their people.

There was a glimmer of hope that Trump’s visit could pause hostilities and enable humanitarian aid to flow back into Gaza. However, the past two days of attacks have spiked the violence there, almost mirroring the situation right after a fragile ceasefire collapsed in March.

Some estimates suggest that Thursday’s strikes may have caused over 100 deaths. Eyewitnesses in Khan Younis reported numerous bombings, with many bodies brought to Nasser Hospital, some in multiple body bags, indicating the horrific nature of the attacks.

Analysts pointed out that Trump’s itinerary, which excluded Israel, might have stung Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump met leaders from Saudi Arabia and Qatar, landing in the UAE afterward.

Netanyahu, leading a right-leaning coalition, vowed to escalate military action against Gaza, aiming to dismantle Hamas and recover hostages. In October 2023, Hamas took 251 hostages during an attack that claimed 1,200 lives, mostly civilians. In retaliation, Israeli operations have reportedly led to nearly 52,928 deaths in Gaza, according to local health ministries.

Recent reports indicated around 160 casualties in just 48 hours, although official independent verification is lacking. Israeli officials assert that many targets were senior Hamas figures while accusing Hamas of endangering civilians.

The pressure on Israel to relax its blockade is increasing as food and fuel supplies dwindle. Nearly half a million people might face starvation, while many others are barely getting enough to eat, according to humanitarian assessments.

Human Rights Watch criticized Israel’s blockade as a harmful military tactic, while others condemned plans to further restrict Gaza’s 2 million residents into even smaller areas. Israel, however, argues that Hamas exploits aid for military purposes and is suggesting a controlled distribution of humanitarian supplies from designated hubs, guarded by Israeli forces.

Family representatives would supposedly be able to collect monthly food packages from these locations in southern Gaza. The U.S.-based Gaza Humanitarian Foundation plans to launch this initiative soon but has requested Israel to lift its lockdown.

Israel has yet to respond to this initiative. UN officials in Gaza have labeled the plan as insufficient and potentially risky. There’s also escalating violence in the West Bank, where a pregnant woman was tragically killed while heading to the hospital, allegedly due to gunfire from a Palestinian gunman.

The armed wing of Hamas described the incident as “heroic,” though they did not claim direct responsibility. Meanwhile, reports emerged of five Palestinians losing their lives during an Israeli military operation targeting a village in northern Tanman, with officials citing anti-terrorism motives for the raid.
