California Couple Accused of Hindering ICE Agents by Trying to Ram Their Vehicle

This week, federal agents in South Los Angeles arrested a couple accused of attempting to obstruct immigration officials by driving into oncoming traffic. It’s alleged that they tried to stop agents from executing an immigration arrest warrant.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California reported the arrests of 28-year-old Gustavo Torres and 34-year-old Chiara Jaime Flores.

“These defendants recklessly endangered the lives of federal agents,” said Bill Essay from the Central District of California. “Anyone who interferes with immigration officials can face serious criminal charges and possible prison time.”

The incident took place on February 28th, when a Homeland Security Investigation agent attempted to deliver four search warrants across various locations in Los Angeles. Prosecutors noted that when the agents approached their residence, a small group of protesters gathered, making the situation increasingly tense. Ultimately, the agent decided to leave.

As the agents approached the intersection of 61st Street and Broadway, Torres and Flores allegedly drove a Honda Fit, blocking a government vehicle’s path. They reportedly maneuvered through oncoming traffic on 61st Street, passing two other government vehicles before obstructing one.

The driver reportedly slammed on the brakes in front of the police vehicle, seemingly to provoke a collision.
Prosecutors stated that the couple aggressively pursued police vehicles over two miles, switching lanes in an attempt to chase down the agents.

Should they be convicted, both individuals could face up to six years in federal prison.
