Trump Speaks on Middle East Transformation
During a speech at the Saudi Arabian Investment Forum in Riyadh on May 13, President Donald Trump praised the ongoing changes in the Middle East. He highlighted the progress made by local leaders and the development of cities like Riyadh and Abu Dhabi. Rather than focusing on Western interventions that often criticized nations like Afghanistan and Iraq, he emphasized the importance of local initiatives that truly make a difference.
Trump also pushed back against Western criticism regarding governance. He suggested that the positive changes seen in the region stemmed from embracing local cultures and traditions rather than imposing foreign views.
“Peace, prosperity, and progress come not from rejecting your heritage, but from embracing it,” he told the enthusiastic audience.
On a related note, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) discussed the speech with Glenn Beck on a recent episode of his program, noting the significance of building relationships through trade rather than intervention.
However, Paul expressed concern over Trump accepting a temporary U.S. Air Force jet valued at $400 million from Qatar, stating, “The Constitution prohibits accepting gifts unless approved by Congress.” He warned that accepting jets can create the appearance of impropriety, especially with ongoing weapons deals between Qatar and the U.S.
“Such actions could cloud the administration’s objectivity,” he added, proposing instead that Qatar sell the jet directly to the government or return it to Boeing. This, he argued, would reduce scrutiny surrounding Trump’s ties with Qatar.
Nonetheless, even purchasing the plane brings its own set of “practical concerns.” If the Boeing contract for a new Air Force jet is nearing completion, it might actually be quicker to wait for that than to use the one from Qatar, he mentioned. Paul’s comments led to a broader inquiry about Boeing’s operations and the timeline of military aircraft development.
