Joe Don Baker, the talented actor famous for his roles in “Walking Tall” and several James Bond films, has passed away at the age of 89. He died on May 7, as his family shared in an obituary released on Tuesday. The cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

The obituary expressed fond memories, stating, “Joe Don was a beacon of kindness and generosity. His intellectual curiosity made him a greedy reader and sparked a deep love for nature and animals, particularly cats. Throughout his life, Joe Don’s warmth and compassion touched many lives, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew him.”

Baker was born on February 12, 1936, in Grossbeck, Texas. He attended North Texas State University, where he earned a degree in business administration. After two years in the U.S. Army, he moved to New York, aiming to kickstart his acting career.

His acting journey began with studies at the actor studio, leading to a theater career before making the leap to Los Angeles. Baker’s first significant on-screen appearance was in a 1965 episode of “Honey West,” followed by his film debut in 1967’s “Cool Handle Travel.”

Over nearly five decades, Baker graced numerous television shows and films. He gained recognition for his portrayal of Sheriff Buford Pusser in the 1973 thriller “Walking Tall” and acted in three James Bond films, including “Goldeneye” (1995) and “The Living Daylights” (1987).

Besides these iconic roles, Baker appeared in remakes of “Mitchell,” “Charlie Barrick,” “The Natural,” “Fletch,” “Mars Attacks!”, “Reality Bites,” and Martin Scorsese’s “Cape Fear.” On television, he starred in series such as “I Shade” and featured in shows like “Mission: Impossible” and “The Heat of the Night.”

Baker received a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor for his work in the British miniseries “Edge of Darkness.” His last on-screen role was in the 2012 film “Mud,” where he acted alongside Matthew McConaughey before retiring later that year.

The obituary mentions that Baker was married for 11 years but had no children. It concluded by highlighting his enduring connection to his hometown of Groesbeck and noting the small circle of close friends who will deeply miss him.

Baker’s funeral is scheduled for next Tuesday in Mission Hills, California. His family shared a heartfelt sentiment: “As we say goodbye to Joe Don, we cherish the memories and love he gave us. Although he is no longer with us, his spirit will always linger, guiding us in our lives. You will be missed by all, but you will never be forgotten.”
