Florida AG Warns Fitness Club Over Bathroom Policy
Florida Attorney General James Usmeyer recently cautioned a high-end fitness club to revise its bathroom policy following complaints and legal actions under Governor Ron DeSantis’ “Let Kids be Kids” initiative.
Usmeyer expressed his views to Fox News Digital, stating, “Men don’t belong in women’s toilets or locker rooms. It’s not happening in Florida under my watch.” This remark came after a woman reported encountering someone she identified as a biological male in a women’s locker room.
Sonja Horton recounted her experience in a sauna with “a man in a bikini,” mentioning that when she approached the front desk, she was told, “Whatever you identify, you can go anywhere.”
Usmeyer emphasized the importance of privacy and safety for female patrons, suggesting that the gym could either alter its policy immediately or face legal challenges. He declared, “In Florida, we don’t sacrifice women’s rights to satisfy men’s delusions.”
Horton voiced her concerns about safety, asserting that “fair” biological men should use women’s facilities. The incident prompted Usmeyer to send a warning to Life Time Inc., indicating that the current policy “evidently harms and puts women using the facility at Palm Beach Gardens at risk.”
In his letter, he pointed out that Palm Beach County’s code, which aims to make gender identity a protected class, appears to conflict with existing Florida laws safeguarding women’s rights.
In response to the attorney general’s letter, Life Time officials stated they had “deliberately reviewed” their interpretation of Florida’s Civil Rights Act and Palm Beach County Ordinance concerning public accommodations and “gender.” They noted that they would comply with applicable laws while ensuring a welcoming environment for all members.
A spokesman for Governor DeSantis, Brian Wright, reiterated the administration’s stance, asserting, “In Florida, we reject the lie that men can become women and support the privacy and safety of women’s private spaces, like locker rooms.”
Fox News Digital reached out to Palm Beach County for further clarification on interpretations of the county’s legislation.
