Woman Investigated After Mummified Body of 600-Pound Son Discovered in Her Home

A woman in New Orleans is facing scrutiny after it was revealed that she lived with the mummified body of her 600-pound son for nine months. Authorities found the remains while investigating a chaotic house in Lakeview, which was overrun with garbage and animals.

This discovery was made on May 15, following numerous complaints from neighbors about the home’s condition. The woman, identified as Barbara Hinesworth, who is described as elderly and having mental disabilities, reportedly told officers that her son had died about nine months prior due to various medical issues.

According to the city’s Code Enforcement Bureau, this home at 6355 Argonne Blvd. had been under observation since May 7, when health department officials noted its deplorable state. Their investigations unveiled not only the mummified remains but also signs of severe hoarding, with mounds of trash visible inside and outside the property.

After the revelation, demolition contractors were instructed to prepare for cleanup, including the removal of trash and sealing holes in the bathroom floor. Efforts are also underway for disinfecting the property, amid concerns about pests and safety. The Code Enforcement Bureau previously conducted a hearing on May 6, where the owner was found guilty of several violations, resulting in a fine of $6,125, and the property was classified as a public nuisance.
