Trump’s Visit to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
President Trump made a landmark visit to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in the United Arab Emirates, which marks his first publicly recognized visit to a Muslim place of worship during his presidency. The mosque, known for its striking white marble domes and intricately designed inlaid floors, was closed for the day to honor his presence.
Upon arrival, Trump removed his shoes—a customary practice—while being escorted by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed Al Nahyan. He expressed his admiration for the mosque, stating, “Is this not beautiful? It’s so beautiful. It’s an incredible culture.” He also noted the mosque’s closure for his visit, remarking, “This is the first time they have closed the mosque that day. That’s true. It’s the first time they have closed it. It pays tribute to me.”
This visit is part of Trump’s broader diplomatic tour in the Middle East, which began with a ceremonial reception in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Notably, Trump has family interests in these countries. His relationship with UAE ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed stems from the country’s decision to normalize relations with Israel while Trump was in office. Coincidentally, his daughter, Ivanka Trump, and her husband, Jared Kushner, visited the same mosque in 2020 while serving as government officials.
The significance of this visit is notable, especially considering that American presidents typically visit churches, but only a handful have done so at mosques. Historically, President Dwight Eisenhower opened the Washington, D.C. Mosque in 1957, while former President George W. Bush gave a speech there following the 9/11 attacks in 2001. However, Trump previously criticized Barack Obama’s visit to a mosque in 2016, suggesting it was an unusual choice for the president.
While Trump’s past comments on mosques and Muslim-majority countries have been contentious, his tone appears to have shifted recently. During an Iftar at the White House this past March, he acknowledged the Muslim community’s support and expressed a willingness to stand by them during his presidency.
