Trump administration seeks 20,000 National Guard members to assist with large-scale deportation initiative

National Guard Deployment for Immigration Enforcement

The Trump administration is seeking to deploy 20,000 National Guard troops to bolster efforts surrounding deportations. This move is aimed at enhancing the ongoing deportation initiatives under President Trump.

By the end of the 100th day of his presidency, Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) had removed over 66,000 undocumented immigrants from the country. Still, officials are optimistic about increasing these numbers through additional resources.

“The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is calling upon 20,000 National Guard members to assist in the presidential duties of arresting and deporting undocumented individuals with criminal backgrounds,” stated Tricia McLaughlin, the Deputy Director of Homeland Security.

McLaughlin further emphasized that DHS is committed to employing every available resource to remove individuals involved in serious crimes—including gang members, murderers, and other violent offenders—ensuring the safety of U.S. citizens remains the top priority.

The Department of Defense is currently evaluating the situation to see if National Guard forces can be authorized for immigration law enforcement, as reported by various sources.

There remains some ambiguity about whether state approval is required and how these forces might be utilized in deportation efforts.

In the meantime, border patrol representatives mentioned they have been encouraged to “volunteer” for upcoming ICE operations aimed at addressing what has been characterized as a “national” initiative.

Details about the operation’s locations and targets are still not fully clarified.

Notably, recent statistics show that illegal crossings at the southern border have drastically reduced under Trump’s administration, with border agents reporting a decrease of 93% from the previous year, leading to an unexpected drop to under 10,000 encounters in April.

“I’m eager to assist in cleaning up our communities,” one volunteer agent expressed regarding the support for ICE efforts.

The Trump administration has also been exploring options to facilitate voluntary departures for undocumented immigrants, offering incentives like a $1,000 bonus for returning home under the concept of “self-deportation.”

According to ICE records, the administration’s deportation efforts have resulted in over 65,000 removals to date.
