Aston Villa Secures Victory Against Tottenham
Ange Postecoglou finds himself grappling with the weight of another disappointing outcome. This time, as the clock ticked, Ezri Consa kicked off the scoring for Aston Villa, and Boubakar Kamara quickly added another goal, giving Unai Emery a strong edge in their quest for Champions League qualification. The atmosphere during the match reflected the fans’ enthusiasm, and the three points gained from this game served as significant motivation. For Postecoglou, it marked yet another frustrating defeat ahead of the upcoming Europa League final against Manchester United. The promising start from son Heung Min feels like a distant memory now.
It’s worth contemplating the toll this season has taken on the Spurs. Postecoglou made three adjustments following last Sunday’s loss to Crystal Palace, but unfortunately, that also ended with a disheartening 2-0 score. This defeat brings their total to 25 losses across all competitions, tying the club’s single-season record from 1991-92. Remarkably, Tottenham has suffered eight losses in their last eleven league matches. They currently sit above the relegation zone but aren’t far from danger.
This Spurs team, however, is likely to undergo significant changes when they travel to Spain next week. Sergio Reguilon made his first Premier League start of the season, which also marks his first start since April 2022, during the Antonio Conte era. Dejan Kulusevski missed out due to knee surgery, and Mikey Moore’s inclusion in the starting lineup caused some early disruption for the opposition.
It felt like getting a foothold in the match was becoming increasingly challenging until Villa took the lead, shifting the momentum momentarily against Newcastle for a brief spell. The Spurs created a few decent chances, including an impressive, instinctive save by Emiliano Martinez to deny Wilson O’Dobert’s flicked shot. Prior to that, Martinez had witnessed Odobert slice through the defense, making a significant impact before sending a powerful shot against the post.
Ominous signs lingered as Morgan Rogers closed in, while Marco Asensio narrowly missed the target. Consa also posed a threat with headers, one of which stemmed from a free kick earned after Pipe Matal Saar struggled against Asensio. Unfortunately, Saar seemed hesitant in those moments.
After halftime, Villa picked up steam. Emery urged his players forward, closely monitoring the play, particularly urging Amadou Onana to make it tough on Tottenham, just as he had earlier. Kevin Danso blocked a shot from Ian Matzen, but Villa capitalized on a corner shortly after. Villa’s captain, John McGinn, delivered a ball to the back post where Ollie Watkins redirected it toward the six-yard box, allowing Consa to evade Mattis Tell and slot the ball through the legs of Spurs’ substitute Ibes Vizma. The significance of that goal was palpable, especially given it had been Consa’s first league goal in over a year.
Meanwhile, Postecoglou remained visibly frustrated, standing with arms folded in the dugout. It could have been worse for the Spurs, as Kinski made a noteworthy save following a strike that ricocheted off Watkins. There seemed to be mounting pressure for Villa as nerves crept in, especially considering their past home form, which has only seen them suffer one league defeat at home to Arsenal back in August.
By the 73rd minute, Villa had firmly taken control of the game. Kamara skillfully maneuvered around Bisma just inside the box and fired a low shot past Kinski. At that moment, the Spurs were gearing up for a double substitution, looking to inject some fresh energy with Dominique Solanke and Rodrigo Bentancourt coming on. Brennan Johnson, a player previously linked with Villa, also entered the fray. It was clear that Postecoglou’s side was struggling as Villa continued to assert themselves on the pitch.
