New Jersey Voters Favor Trump Over Their Democratic Governor

Trump’s Approval Rating in New Jersey

Recent polling indicates that President Donald Trump has received a neutral approval rating in New Jersey, as reported by Emerson College in collaboration with PIX 11. The poll shows that 47% of respondents approve of Trump’s performance, while another 47% disapprove, leaving 6% without a clear opinion.

In contrast, Governor Phil Murphy is experiencing a negative approval rating within the traditionally blue state. According to the same poll, only 40% of participants view Murphy positively, while 45% express disapproval. Additionally, 15% did not provide any feedback.

This dynamic might raise concerns for Democrats, who have historically won every presidential election in New Jersey since 1992. Trump has consistently increased his voter turnout in the state over the last three elections. He garnered over 1.6 million votes in 2016, surpassed 1.8 million in 2020, and exceeded 1.9 million in 2024.

The 2016 election saw a notable gap between Trump and Hillary Clinton, who won by a margin of 14 percentage points—or about 546,345 votes. In comparison, Vice President Harris won more votes than Clinton in the last election, but the gap narrowed to just 5.9 points between her and Trump in November.

The difference in votes was about 252,498, indicating that Trump’s favorability may remain steady even after the last election.

Interestingly, the poll also reveals that a majority of participants (53%) would like the next governor to collaborate with the Trump administration, as opposed to 47% who prefer a more oppositional stance against it. This poses an intriguing shift in sentiment among New Jersey voters.

The poll sampled 1,000 registered voters from May 11 to 13, maintaining a margin of error of ±3%.
