Republicans aim to prevent James Comey from holding federal roles

Proposal to Bar Comey from Federal Employment

A resolution has been put forth by the House Republican Research Committee (RSC) aiming to prevent former FBI director James Comey from holding any federal position again. This proposal follows a social media post in which he shared a seemingly innocuous image of shells on the beach accompanied by the numbers “8647.”

Republicans, including former President Trump, interpreted this post as a veiled assassination threat against the current president, the 47th in office.

In light of these concerns, the proposed resolution asks the relevant authorities to take steps that would ensure Comey is barred from future federal employment. It also calls on the Department of Justice to launch a thorough investigation and share its findings with the appropriate House committee and the public.

In response, the 64-year-old Comey clarified that his Instagram post was not meant to advocate for violence against Trump, emphasizing that “some people didn’t realize they were linking those numbers to violence.”

He added, “I’ve never experienced it, but I oppose all types of violence, so I deleted the post.”

The number “86” is generally understood to mean to reject or discard something or someone. However, RSC Chairman August Pfluger from Texas, one of the resolution’s proponents, expressed outrage, accusing Comey of committing a “shocking betrayal of trust” through what he described as dangerous rhetoric.

Pfluger’s statement highlighted the unexpected nature of such comments coming from someone who once led a critical law enforcement agency, labeling it as “un-American” and asserting the need for accountability and transparency.

The resolution stresses that it’s imperative for Congress to take all necessary actions to safeguard legal institutions from individuals who threaten the rule of law and promote discord or violence against political opponents.

A spokesperson for the Secret Service noted that the agency will closely investigate any potential threats arising from the situation. “We take social media posts from former FBI directors very seriously. Beyond that, we will refrain from commenting on specifics concerning protection intelligence,” the spokesperson remarked.

Reports from CNN revealed that Comey has agreed to a voluntary interview with the Secret Service at its Washington Field office later this week.

It’s worth noting that Comey and Trump have had a contentious relationship dating back to the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, leading to Trump’s decision to fire him during that ongoing inquiry.
