Michigan woman receives sentence for causing the deaths of siblings Alanah and Zayn Phillips at a birthday celebration.

A drunk driver, Marshella Chidester, responsible for the tragic deaths of two young siblings at a birthday party in Michigan, expressed gratitude for the family’s forgiveness during her court appearance this week.

Chidester, 67, received a sentence of 25 to 50 years for the incident that claimed the lives of 8-year-old Alanah Phillips and her 4-year-old brother Zayn. Her blood alcohol concentration was significantly above the legal limit at the time she collided with the celebration on April 20, 2024.

The heartbreaking moment unfolded when Chidester drove her SUV into the Swan Creek Boat Club parking lot, tragically impacting the family celebration.

Mariah Dodds, the mother of the deceased children, shared her profound sorrow in court, stating, “The sadness was unbearable,” while expressing how the loss had devastated her life.

Tragically, both children died at the scene, and the crash left 13 others injured. In her plea for mercy, Chidester stated, “I asked the Lord to forgive me,” seemingly acknowledging the enormity of her actions.

Chidester further appealed for understanding, asking, “And at least look at your heart and if you can forgive me at some point, I’d be very grateful for that.”

After a four-day trial, she was found guilty of second-degree murder among other charges. Her defense claimed a leg injury led to her pressing the gas pedal too hard and asserted that she had only consumed one glass of wine prior to the accident.

Chidester may be eligible for parole after serving 25 years, which would put her at 92 years old.
