As Israel initiates Operation ‘Gideon’s Chariots’, its strategy to ‘take control’ of Gaza

Operation Gideon’s Tank Launched by Israeli Forces in Gaza

Israeli forces have initiated a significant military operation in Gaza, dubbed “Operation Gideon’s Tank”. The goal appears to be about gaining control over strategic areas, alongside the intent to free hostages and defeat Hamas. This surge in military activity happened just as U.S. President Donald Trump wrapped up a visit to the region, without any agreements on a ceasefire.

According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the operation represents a significant escalation in their strategy in Gaza. They stated they mobilized for this extensive offensive as part of the initial phases of the Gideon operation. The IDF emphasized that their forces are dedicated to protecting Israeli citizens while striving to meet the objectives of the ongoing conflict.

The situation on the ground in Gaza has escalated, with local civil defense officials citing reports of around 100 fatalities due to the Israeli assault. In contrast, the IDF claims that within a mere span of 24 hours, they targeted over 150 locations deemed as terrorist sites. The ongoing conflict has led to severe shortages of essential supplies, such as food, clean water, fuel, and medicine, prompting non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to call for the lifting of aid restrictions.

Israel’s stance involves cutting off aid to pressure Hamas, who are still believed to hold many Israeli hostages taken during the attacks that occurred on October 7, 2023.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has laid out a strategy focusing on relocating Gaza’s population to the south and consolidating more territory in Gaza in efforts to eliminate Hamas. This plan has faced international criticism, with remarks from the UN’s human rights director highlighting the need to address the humanitarian crisis. Trump himself acknowledged the dire conditions in Gaza, stating, “A lot of people are starving.”

Meanwhile, there’s growing tension between the U.S. and Israeli governments. Trump has mentioned his desire to resolve what he described as the “brutal war” in Gaza, suggesting the establishment of a “free zone” within the enclave, though he did not visit Israel during his Middle East trip. “I have the concept of Gaza. I think it’s very good. Let’s make it a free zone,” he noted in a statement made in Qatar.

Additionally, the U.S. has distanced itself from Israel on two notable occasions, engaging with local extremist groups such as Hamas and the Houthis. Last week, Hamas released Israeli-American hostages, and the Houthis committed to not targeting U.S. vessels in the Red Sea while continuing their anti-Israel operations.

Despite the ongoing military operations, dissatisfaction is growing within Israel. Many reservists have voiced their concerns over the prolonged conflict, and a coalition of Air Force veterans and retired officers is urging the government to prioritize negotiating for the return of hostages, even if it means halting military engagements.
