Scott Jennings, a GOP political commentator and CNN contributor, dodged questions during an interview on Friday regarding his potential candidacy for the Senate seat currently held by Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)
During his appearance on the “Overtime with Bill Maher” segment following HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” Jennings chuckled but didn’t give a clear response when Maher asked if he was considering a political run in his hometown.
At 47, Jennings, a strong supporter of Trump, is seen as one of the potential GOP candidates to fill McConnell’s seat. McConnell, who is 83, announced in February that he would not pursue an eighth term in 2026.
Maher pointed out that Jennings has been showing signs that he may be gearing up for a campaign. He referred to a book praising Trump that Jennings had mentioned in December and noted that Jennings lives in Kentucky while regularly commuting to New York City and Washington, D.C.
“Sounds like you’re running,” Maher joked, prompting laughter from Jennings.
According to a report from the Daily Beast, which cited an anonymous source, Jennings told attendees at the White House correspondent’s dinner weekend that he would only run for the Senate if Trump endorsed him, suggesting Trump backs candidates who support Buck in the race.
Meanwhile, U.S. Representative Andy Barr (R-KY) and 2023 GOP gubernatorial candidate Daniel Cameron have already declared their intentions to replace McConnell. Conservative businessman Nate Morris has also expressed interest but is still contemplating whether to formally enter the race. Reports indicate he has been collaborating with operatives connected to Trump.
