Biden Reflects on Memory Lapses in Recent Interview
In a recent interview with special adviser Robert Huar, former President Joe Biden humorously referred to himself as the “young man,” possibly to lighten the mood regarding his struggles with memory in the context of a newly released audio segment.
The audio revealed some troubling moments where Biden seemed to have difficulty recalling significant events, such as the passing of his son Beau, his tenure as Vice President during Donald Trump’s first election, and questions surrounding classified documents he no longer possessed.
Throughout the recording, Biden appeared to slur his words and mumble at times, adding to concerns about his cognitive clarity.
Transcripts from the interviews, conducted on October 8 and 9, 2023, were made public on March 12, 2024. On the first day, Huar emphasized the necessity of truthful responses and encouraged Biden to do his best to remember pertinent details. It was noted that these events occurred years earlier.
“I’m young, so that’s not a problem,” Biden joked, despite being 82.
“Okay, great. I’m happy to hear that,” Huar responded.
Biden often mentioned, “I don’t remember,” when questioned about the classifications of documents during the interview. Huar, appointed by then Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate Biden’s handling of confidential documents, released a report on February 5, 2024, stating he would not pursue charges against the former president. The findings did note, however, that Biden had “intentionally” obtained some documents during his time as Vice President.
Biden defended himself, saying, “I’m well-intentioned, I’m an older man and I know what I’m doing. I’m the president and I’ve recovered from this country. I don’t need his recommendation.” This response came after inquiries from Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy following the release of Huar’s report.
The situation drew increased scrutiny from Republicans, who criticized Biden for his public gaffes, suggesting a lack of mental fitness for the presidency.
Initially, Democrats and the Biden administration dismissed Huar’s findings, arguing that the former president was quite sharp and insinuating that Huar had ulterior motives.
As the 2024 election approached, discussions around Biden’s age and cognitive state intensified, leading some Democrats to urge him to reconsider his candidacy ahead of a debate against Trump in June. Ultimately, Biden stepped back from the presidential race in July, concluding his term. Vice President Kamala Harris then faced Trump in the November election and was defeated.
