Donald Trump announced his intention to address what he termed the “Blood Bus” war in Ukraine, expressing a desire to intervene and halt the conflict. In a post on his social media account, Trump mentioned he would have a conversation with Putin on Monday to discuss this issue, stressing that the ongoing violence results in the deaths of over 5,000 soldiers from both Russia and Ukraine on average. He often highlighted these casualty figures, though he did not provide any justification for them.
The Kremlin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, confirmed that the necessary arrangements for the call between the US and Russian presidents are being made. This upcoming call will be followed by a discussion involving Ukrainian President Zelensky and NATO leaders, aimed at finding a resolution to the war that has persisted since the large-scale Russian invasion in 2022.
Recently, Russia and Ukraine participated in unsuccessful talks in Istanbul, marking the first engagement of such nature since the war began. Ukraine indicated its willingness for a ceasefire, yet Russia’s demands were labeled as “unacceptable.” The aim of Russia seems to be a total takeover of parts of Ukraine, particularly its eastern regions.
It’s uncertain what positive contributions Trump could make in facilitating peace. His past interactions with Ukraine were marked by skepticism; he had previously paused military assistance and publicly scrutinized Ukraine’s leadership. Recently, he proposed a trip to Turkey for discussions if Putin attended, but ultimately, Putin sent lower-level negotiators instead.
Trump hasn’t concealed his frustration with Zelensky. In a statement to Fox News, he criticized the management of aid sent to Ukraine, expressing dissatisfaction. “What bothered me… you know, you pissed me off,” he remarked.
On social media, Zelensky condemned a recent drone strike by Russia that resulted in the deaths of nine civilians on a passenger bus, reiterating Ukraine’s long-standing call for a complete ceasefire to save lives, emphasizing that Russia only seems intent on continuing its violent actions.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on social media, announced he spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, emphasizing the urgency to cease hostilities. Rubio shared that the US presented a thorough peace proposal and welcomed a recent prisoner exchange, encouraging all parties to seize this opportunity to end the conflict.
In another Truth Social post, Trump criticized Walmart for raising prices, attributing it to tariffs he imposed, stating that such moves should not affect American consumers. He expressed that retailers should absorb the costs instead.
Further, Trump shared a video on his platform promoting conspiracy theories involving Bill and Hillary Clinton, linking them to various unsubstantiated claims, including the murder of Democratic staffer Seth Rich. Rich’s death in 2016 has fueled numerous conspiracy theories, many of which have been rejected by credible sources and have caused distress to his family, especially following a financial settlement with Fox News over false reporting related to his death.
