Vance meets Pope Leo XIV in Vatican City

Vice President Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance attended the Clergy Mass on Sunday in Vatican City.

Before departing St. Peter’s Square, they were greeted by Pope Leo XIV, as mentioned by the Vice President’s spokesperson.

During their meeting, Vance, along with the first American Pope, exchanged brief handshakes and conversation. The Second Lady, adorned with a black lace veil, stood alongside Vance.

Vance was part of a U.S. delegation led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his wife, Janet. Notably, Vance converted to Catholicism in 2019 and had previously met with Pope Francis last month.

Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky also participated in the Mass and later met with the Pope. The Pope has expressed a willingness to facilitate peace talks between Russian and Ukrainian leaders at the Vatican amid the ongoing conflict.

Vance’s interaction with the Pope carries significance, especially as Leo has previously criticized the Vice President’s views on immigration.

Earlier this year, a critical opinion piece was published, highlighting Vance’s positions. The piece argued that “Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank love for others.” Other writings from the Pope have also touched on immigration, indicating a discrepancy with Vance’s perspectives.

Vance’s position on immigration has drawn scrutiny from fellow Catholics, particularly regarding his comments on the priority of love for family, neighbors, and fellow citizens. It’s a complex discussion, to say the least.
