The Philadelphia Phillies are facing a significant setback in their bid for the World Series.
Jose Alvarado, a left-handed reliever who has been a key player for the team this season, has been handed an 80-game suspension due to a positive test for banned substances as per MLB’s performance-enhancing drug policy. The league’s announcement confirms that Alvarado tested positive for exogenous testosterone.
In a statement, the Phillies expressed their support for MLB’s prevention and treatment initiatives while also voicing disappointment regarding Alvarado’s violations.
This season, the 29-year-old pitcher boasts a 2.70 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP, alongside 25 strikeouts, seven saves, and a 4-1 record over 20 innings. However, this is his final year under a $22 million contract, although the Phillies have a team option worth $9 million for the 2026 season.
Alvarado’s absence is particularly tough on an already struggling bullpen. The Phillies rank seventh in the league with a 4.66 ERA for relievers.
Looking at alternatives, 24-year-old right-hander Orion Kerkering, who had a promising breakout campaign last season, has seen his ERA rise to 2.29 from 19 ERAs with a 1.44 WHIP this year. Meanwhile, former Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano has yet to find his rhythm since inking a one-year, $8.5 million deal; he currently has a 7.71 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP in 19 appearances.
As of Sunday, the Phillies held a 27-18 record, positioned second in the National League wild card race while trailing the Mets by 1.5 games in the NL East.
