Jennifer Lawrence Discusses Motherhood and Filming While Pregnant
Jennifer Lawrence’s life has changed dramatically since becoming a mother. The actress, 34, is at the Cannes Film Festival promoting her upcoming film, If I Die, and has opened up about her “postpartum journey” and the emotional sacrifices involved in filming while expecting her second child.
During a press conference, she shared the difficulties of balancing her roles as a mother and an actress. “It was really hard to separate what I do from what she does, and it was just heartbreaking,” she said, noting that her character also grapples with mental illness following childbirth. Lawrence reflected on the isolating nature of postpartum experiences, saying, “There’s really nothing like postpartum. It feels very lonely. Even in a beautiful place like Montana, where our characters live, you’re still left feeling like an alien with extreme anxiety and depression.”
While filming alongside Robert Pattinson, she revealed that she was five months pregnant, and she discussed how motherhood has transformed her in unexpected ways. “Having a child changes everything. It’s both brutal and incredible,” she remarked. “Honestly, if you want to be an actor, have a child.”
Lawrence also talked about challenging days on set, particularly the first day that included intense scenes between her and Pattinson. “The day before filming started, Lynn showed us this scene where our characters were attacking each other. We were like, ‘Oh, okay,'” she recalled, hinting at the pressure of those initial moments.
Pattinson, who welcomed a child last year, added that navigating these new roles can be tough. He expressed his struggle to comprehend his place in the relationship post-parenthood. “It feels like there’s this intruder now between us,” he said, describing the shift in dynamics.
