Rubio Shows Cautious Optimism on Peace Efforts with Ukraine
On Sunday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio shared a careful sense of optimism regarding the Kremlin’s willingness to facilitate peace negotiations with Ukraine, as the U.S. seeks to end a nearly three-year conflict.
During a conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday, Rubio learned that Russia is in the process of crafting a ceasefire proposal.
“He mentioned to us on the call that they are working on a set of ideas and requirements to move forward with a ceasefire and further negotiations,” Rubio noted in an interview on CBS’s “Meet the Press.” “So we’re just waiting for that, and hopefully, it’ll be something close enough to what the Ukrainians want, which might help resolve some differences.”
“Are they bringing us together? Well, that’s what we’re trying to figure out, and we should have clarity soon,” Rubio added.
Nonetheless, the top U.S. diplomats highlighted that the U.S. is stepping into a new role as peace discussions begin to take shape.
“We’re not traveling the globe trying to arrange meetings anymore. Instead, we’re working with the meetings that have been scheduled, and if opportunities arise, we’ll do whatever it takes to facilitate these discussions,” Rubio explained.
President Trump has voiced frustration over the stagnant negotiations, threatening harsh sanctions against Russia if no progress is made. He also announced plans to have separate discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky on Monday.
Zelensky was in touch with Rubio and Vice President Vance on Sunday.
