Tom Cruise’s Relentless Drive in Filmmaking
The conversation surrounding “Mission: Impossible – Final Calculation” seems to hinge on its penultimate word, symbolizing a significant moment in Tom Cruise’s career. This could indeed be his last big leap—in a manner of speaking—as he engages in various high-octane pursuits. He even manages to brush his teeth amidst all the action, hitting major global landmarks along the way. It’s a notable collaboration, especially since it marks the end of a significant journey with Simon Pegg.
But maybe that’s not entirely true. Regardless, it doesn’t detract from the excitement of it all. After years of remaining somewhat removed from the spotlight, Cruise is now actively promoting this installment. He’s doing interviews, attending red carpet events, and discussing it publicly. For fans of Tom Cruise, it’s a refreshing change. Yet, throughout these appearances, one message keeps surfacing: Tom Cruise just doesn’t stop.
At the premiere in New York, Cruise reiterated a sentiment he’s shared before. An interviewer pointed out that two years ago, he expressed a desire to still be making “Mission: Impossible” films in his 80s. However, Cruise clarified it a bit, stating he’d actually be making movies into his 80s, not just this franchise. “I will never stop,” he proclaimed. “I will never stop acting, whether it’s dramas or comedies—I’m just excited.”
It’s worth mentioning that he’ll be 63 in just a few weeks, which means he won’t hit 100 until the summer of 2062. If he’s as committed to these plans as he appears to be—he really does seem like someone who sticks to his word—then we can look forward to several more decades of Tom Cruise films. Quite astonishing, really, considering we’re closer to his initial movie debut on July 4th than we are to what some might call the end of his career.
Before we get ahead of ourselves, there are new projects in the pipeline. Cruise is set to take on a different role in an upcoming film by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Additionally, he has expressed interest in multiple sequels: a new “Top Gun,” and potentially more action-packed adventures like “Day’s Lightning” and “Edge of Tomorrow.” He even mentioned the idea of a musical at one point. And yes, there was talk about filming in space, which, honestly, wouldn’t be too surprising given his ambitious nature.
Yet, there are hurdles ahead. Movie theaters are facing challenges, with ticket sales dwindling and audiences not filling seats like they used to. It’s difficult to predict which film will strike a chord with audiences. While “Top Gun: Maverick” was a triumph, it’s crucial to remember that earlier “Mission: Impossible” films have not always fared so well in recent times. Reports suggest that the production budget for this latest installment is around $400 million, indicating it needs to reach nearly $1 billion just to break even. That’s a tough challenge, especially if many viewers opt to wait for the streaming release instead.
What else could get in his way? The threats of AI, environmental issues, and more loom large. The world has certainly transformed over the past 37 years, and it may look even more different in the next three to four decades. But if anyone can weather these existential challenges, it seems it would be Tom Cruise. If he has to produce a film from a makeshift set in a nuclear fallout shelter, you can bet that’s what he’ll do.
Because he’s Tom Cruise. If he wants to keep making films past the age of 100—well, it seems likely he just might. The bigger question is: what will the world look like when that time comes?
