New driver shares thoughts on securing pole position at Indy 500

IndyCar rookie Robert Shwartzman achieved pole position for the Indianapolis 500 during his fastest lap on Sunday afternoon. This was his first experience racing on an oval track. He appeared on “Fox & Friends” the following morning, just hours after securing this top spot for what many refer to as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”

Shwartzman, reflecting on his accomplishment, said, “Honestly, I still can’t wrap my head around it. It feels like a dream come true. I’ve been envisioning this for a long time. Everything was going smoothly yesterday; the car felt fantastic.” He was genuinely amazed to see himself in P1, expressing excitement over the overwhelming support from fans. “The reactions here in America are just incredible. That’s, perhaps, the most emotional part of my career so far.”

While he hit speeds nearing 230 mph during qualifying, he managed to keep control, a feat particularly noteworthy given that other drivers had faced serious crashes at similar velocities. He mentioned, “It’s quite fast, but as a driver, you train your instincts to keep the right perspective. You have to maintain focus far ahead of you, given the speeds.” It’s a mental challenge; the four laps may seem short, but they feel much longer when you’re racing.

Schwartzman acknowledged the stress that comes with such high-speed racing, stating that he plans to stay calm and composed as he vies for victory in the race. He emphasized the importance of remaining grounded, aiming to enjoy the experience while competing against top-tier drivers.

As for the Indy 500, it’s scheduled to air on May 25th, with pre-race coverage commencing at 10 AM. Fans can also catch the event streaming live on various platforms.
