WNBA Investigates Allegations of Racial Taunts During Game
The WNBA is looking into claims that racial taunts were directed at Chicago Sky player Angel Reese during Saturday’s game against the Indiana Fever.
While the league has acknowledged the accusations of racist provocations, they clarify that these incidents are unrelated to a foul committed by Caitlin Clark against Reese during the match.
The league has stated that they “strongly condemn racism, hatred, and discrimination in all forms,” emphasizing that such behavior has no place in the league or society. They are aware of the allegations and are actively investigating the situation.
The WNBA Players Association also released a statement regarding the matter. They declared, “This kind of behavior is unacceptable in our sports.” Under the WNBA’s “hatred-free space” policy, they trust the league will conduct a thorough investigation and take necessary actions to ensure a safe environment for all.
Despite the flurry of statements decrying racism, there has been no audio or video evidence released supporting the claims of taunts from the crowd.
Both Reese and Clark weighed in on the foul incident. Reese explained that the foul was simply a “basketball play,” while Clark expressed that she was just trying to stop Reese from making an easy layup. “Don’t do anything that isn’t,” Clark mentioned post-game, asserting it was just a good basketball move. “I don’t know what the observers saw to upgrade it. That’s up to them,” she added.
She insisted, “I wasn’t trying to do anything malicious. That’s not who I am as a player.”
Previously, the WNBA also investigated a similar situation involving Connecticut Sun player Alyssa Thomas last season. However, no evidence has surfaced indicating that any racist comments were addressed or evicted during that event.
