Drone Strike in Ukraine Claims Lives of Three Family Members

Russian Drone Attacks in Ukraine Result in Civilian Casualties

KYIV, Ukraine — A drone strike by Russia in the northeastern city of Sumy resulted in the deaths of three family members, including a 13-year-old boy and his father, while two others were injured, according to officials on Monday.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than four years ago, civilian areas have frequently been targeted with drones and missiles. The United Nations reports that over 16,000 civilian lives have been lost in this conflict, and peace efforts led by the U.S. have thus far not succeeded in ending the violence.

Oleh Frikholov, the regional military administrator, indicated that the attack struck a home, causing the deaths of a 36-year-old man, his 13-year-old son, and a 73-year-old woman, who was the man’s partner’s mother. The partner and a 10-year-old son were among the injured.

Recent days have seen an increase in civilian casualties from Russian bombardments, as noted by the United Nations Human Rights Observatory in Ukraine. In May, at least 274 civilians were reported killed and 1,763 injured, marking the highest monthly toll since April 2022. Notably, most incidents occurred in areas distant from active front lines.

Additionally, a nighttime drone strike in Zaporizhia resulted in the death of a woman and injuries to three others, including an 11-year-old boy, as announced by regional director Ivan Fedorov.

According to Ukraine’s air force, Russia launched 88 long-range drones and one ballistic missile overnight, with air defense forces successfully intercepting 79 of them.

In response, Ukraine also directed drones towards Russian territory and areas under its control, continuing long-range attacks targeting oil facilities and military infrastructure, as reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have intercepted 301 Ukrainian drones flying over various regions in Russia, including Crimea, the Sea of Azov, and the Black Sea during the night. Moscow’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, mentioned that 84 drones aimed at the capital were shot down, although he did not provide details about any potential damage. All four airports in Moscow were briefly suspended following the strikes.

Local officials also indicated that evacuations took place in homes due to the attacks in the Vladimir region, located east of Moscow, and the Tula region south of the capital.
