Kansas towns experience severe damage following a strong overnight tornado strike.

Plevna, Kansas – Tornado Causes Significant Damage

In the early hours of Monday, western and central Kansas faced severe storms, including tornadoes that uprooted trees and downed power lines during an unusual tornado emergency.

Emergency management officials in Reno County stated that responders, alongside public works and utility teams, are in the process of evaluating the aftermath. A tornado touched down just before midnight, affecting various rural regions in the county.

The tornado made its way through the city of Plevna, damaging multiple homes, trees, and utility poles.

Residents are advised to steer clear of the impacted areas to allow emergency crews the space they need for assessments.

“We’re thankful residents took cover promptly when the tornado warning was issued,” officials noted. “While the destruction is significant, we’re relieved to report that there have been no injuries or fatalities.”

The National Weather Service’s Wichita office declared a tornado emergency for the cities of Sylvia and Abbeville during the early morning hours.

“The tornado warning for Reno County has been lifted, but it seems Plevna took a direct hit,” said Hutchinson police. “Our first responders are currently surveying the area for injuries and assessing the damages. Keep Plevna in your thoughts.”

In Stafford County, residents were alerted to the fact that storm conditions had disrupted 911 services, prompting calls through Pawnee County.

Officials are making efforts to restore 911 functionality as quickly as possible.

Reports from Midwest Energy indicate that the tornado also severely affected gas and electrical systems in Grinnell, causing power outages for many residents.

Images from Grinnell depicted the extensive destruction left in the tornado’s wake, with trees stripped of leaves and bark while homes sustained considerable damage.

Videos captured showed the tornado sweeping through, churning up clouds of dirt and debris.

In Greensburg, train cars were seen derailed due to the tornado emergency that unfolded Sunday night.

Kiowa County experienced fallen trees and power lines, leading the sheriff’s office to advise people to stay indoors for their safety.

“It’s extremely dark out here,” the sheriff’s office remarked on Facebook. “We want to prevent any accidents.”

The Kansas Department of Transportation announced that Interstate 70 has reopened between Colby and Hayes after the severe weather. However, traffic in both eastbound and westbound directions between mile markers 82 and 87 near Grinnell is limited to one lane.

Additionally, Exit 85 has been closed in Grinnell due to tornado damage and downed power lines.
