Mamdani raises funds for Adrienne Adams to challenge Cuomo

Democratic Candidates Unite Against Cuomo’s Comeback

In a surprising move, Democratic mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani is rallying support to counter former Governor Andrew Cuomo’s return to the political scene in New York City.

In a video shared on X, the Democratic Socialist Councilman from Queens urged his supporters to halt their canvassing efforts for him and to contribute to City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams’ mayoral campaign. He acknowledged that this is a bit unorthodox for a typical campaign appeal.

“Usually, I would be asking you to help me out, but today, I’m doing something different,” Mamdani said, highlighting his consistent focus on defeating Cuomo.

“I want you to donate to another candidate running for mayor, and that’s Adrienne Adams.”

Adams, who is not currently eligible for matching funds from the city’s campaign finance program, has yet to reach the necessary thresholds for qualification. Mamdani reminded his supporters that the deadline for Adams to qualify was swiftly approaching.

“We’re all running to stop Andrew Cuomo and to prevent Eric Adams from a second term,” Mamdani stated.

Adams entered this crowded race in early March, shortly after Cuomo announced his candidacy, contributing to a competitive environment that includes Attorney General Letitia “Tish” James.

So far, Adams has trailed significantly in polls. However, some local political figures believe she could potentially attract some of Cuomo’s support, particularly among Black voters in the outer boroughs.

“Adrian Adams may be the candidate to tap into Cuomo’s voter base,” said Basil Smikle, a campaign strategist.

At 64, Adams could also resonate with older generations, which might be crucial as campaigns unfold.

“Adrienne is gaining support without even spending money and is building a diverse coalition of candidates in this race,” Lupe Tod-Medina, a spokesman for Adams’ campaign, remarked. “Her strength is undeniable, and it’s interesting that her opponent is choosing to fund her.”

On the other hand, recent polls indicate a significant portion of Black Democratic voters still favor Cuomo, while a notable percentage of Latino voters also lean towards him. Only a small fraction of Black Democrats appear willing to back Adams.

The upcoming primary will employ a ranked-choice voting system, allowing voters to support multiple candidates if their first choice doesn’t prevail. Yet, voting is expected to commence just a month before early voting starts for the elections on June 24th.

If Cuomo secures a win, it would mark his significant return to the political stage after stepping down in 2021 amid serious allegations of sexual misconduct, which he has denied.

Veteran strategist Hank Sheinkopf noted that David Mamdani’s efforts have notably kept Cuomo’s support under 50% in the polls.

The complexities of this election will likely unravel in various rounds of ranked voting, making it essential for candidates to possess robust resources to confront Cuomo’s formidable campaign.

Cuomo’s team responded vigorously to Mamdani’s video. They criticized the support Adams has garnered, pointing to his administration’s track record during crucial times, reaffirming that Cuomo remains the only candidate in this race with the experience and proven results necessary to navigate the city back on track.
