Governor Waltz’s Controversial Remarks
Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz drew a stark comparison between federal law enforcement agents and Nazi police from World War II, particularly in relation to their treatment of immigrants under President Trump. His comments were made during a speech over the weekend.
“Donald Trump’s modern Gestapo is rounding people up on the streets,” Waltz remarked, emphasizing his views while addressing graduates at the University of Minnesota Law School.
He described how individuals were taken in unmarked vans, masked agents removing them without the chance to say goodbye to family or mount a defense. Waltz criticized the swift deportation policies of the Trump administration, particularly affecting immigrant rights activists at universities and enforced by ICE officers.
Numerous videos have emerged online showcasing what Waltz described as ambush arrests since Trump’s presidency began.
“This is what happens when the rule of law crumbles, which is precisely what the country’s founders feared: tyrants, scapegoating, and the ability to persecute enemies,” he noted during his speech.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), responsible for ICE, responded to Waltz’s statements on social media, expressing its discontent with the Nazi comparison. A spokesperson said, “I’m absolutely sick of comparing ICE law enforcement with the Gestapo.” They also highlighted a significant rise in attacks on ICE officers.
Last year, Trump faced criticism for labeling Biden’s administration as “Gestapo” during a speech to donors, explaining how he believes such tactics are part of their strategy.
Waltz, who previously ran alongside then-President Kamala Harris, has frequently been vocal about his criticisms of the Trump administration.
As he continued his nearly 20-minute speech, he shared his aspirations for future generations, particularly for those graduates present. “Now, I feel a strong commitment to live up to the oath you are all trying to embody more than ever before,” he admitted, reflecting on the gravity of the moment.
