Charges Filed Against New Jersey Democrats
On Monday, federal prosecutors in New Jersey announced charges against a group of Democrats for allegedly assaulting law enforcement during a political event at an ICE facility earlier this month.
The U.S. Attorney, Alina Haba, detailed that Representative McQuiver was charged with “assaulting, obstructing, and interfering” with law enforcement officials at the Delaney Hall detention center. This confrontation has been described by authorities as an organized effort by McQuiver to disrupt ICE operations while pretending to conduct a council oversight visit.
Haba stated, “I’ve tried to resolve these issues without resorting to criminal charges and even offered McQuiver a chance to reach an agreement. Unfortunately, she declined. The law applies to everyone, politicians included.”
In her defense, McQuiver claims the charges are politically motivated and misrepresent her conduct. “Earlier this month, I, along with a colleague, aimed to check on the treatment of ICE detainees at Delaney Hall, an oversight we’ve conducted numerous times without issue. These accusations are solely political, meant to distort my actions and undermine legislative oversight. This administration will continue to advocate for our constituents and defend their rights,” she asserted.
The charges came concurrently with the dismissal of a misdemeanor trespassing charge against Baraka, another political figure who had protested at the facility. Haba mentioned that Baraka will have the opportunity to tour Delaney Hall under her supervision.
“Congressional oversight is a vital constitutional responsibility, which I wholeheartedly support,” Haba remarked. “But in this instance, the situation is different.”
This story will continue to develop as more information becomes available.
