Trump’s Choice to Head the I.R.S. Supported a Fake Tax Credit

Billy Long, a former Republican Representative from Missouri, was nominated by President Trump to lead the Internal Revenue Service. He is currently urging individuals to take advantage of tax credits that the IRS said they could claim, as reported by a company involved in these credits.

His role in promoting these tax credits is under close examination as he appears before the Senate Finance Committee for his confirmation hearing. Another individual, known for dealing with tax credits from the pandemic era, will also be present.

After leaving Congress in 2023, Long, who doesn’t have a background in tax matters, began collaborating with various entities offering questionable promises to taxpayers regarding significant IRS refunds, according to his financial reports and coverage by the New York Times.

Among those entities is White River Energy Corporation, an oil and gas firm based in Arkansas. The company intends to team up with unspecified tribal groups to request the anticipated credits and promote “tribal tax credits” for those looking to lower their tax obligations.

In a recent statement, Long mentioned, “We gave a few introductions that introduced these credits to third parties.” White River also defended their credit practices, claiming that the federal government hasn’t directed them to cease operations. Bloomberg Tax was the first to highlight the company’s methods.

Long’s financial disclosures for the confirmation process indicate he has received at least $5,000 from White River.
